Northern Viti Levu, Fiji Accommodation Me - The Sun Coast (Lautoka/Rakiraki)

The rugged north coast is known as the Sun Coast for its relatively dry climate. This mountainous region around Rakiraki is home to the world renowned “Fiji Water”. If you’re looking for that real ‘off the beaten track’ side of Fiji, why not take a trip along the Kings Road from Nadi or from Suva. The Sun coast is the Northern stretch of Fiji’s coast on Viti Levu and home to the towns of Lautoka, Ba, Vatukoula, Tavua and offcourse Rakiraki. Off shore from Rakiraki is Nananu-I-Ra Island, which is home to some good family style resorts.  

Lautoka

Some 30 minutes drive to the north of the Nadi International Airport is Lautoka, the second-largest city in Fiji.Lautoka lies in the heart of Fiji sugarcane growing country and that's how it gets its title "the Sugar City." Sugar cane is the major industry of Fiji and Lautoka is the base. During the harvest season a constant procession of "sugar cane trains" flow past on their way to Lautoka's sugar mill at the southern end of the town.In the heart of the city Lautoka's main street, Vitogo Parade, is lined with tall, royal palm trees. The downtown area is within walking distance taking you past many shops and restaurants. In town you will find Churchill Park and the Botanical Gardens just a few blocks away. The market is only surpassed in size by the one in Suva and shares the same fascinating blend of colours and aromas.Lautoka is also the embarkation point for many cruises and transfers to the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands including Blue Lagoon Cruises. Lautoka can be reached by car, taxi, local and express bus from Nadi.

Rakiraki is located on the northernmost tip of Viti Levu Bay. The scenery is stunning along the Kings Road winding down from the mountains from Dama past Viti Levu Bay and to the beautiful region of Rakiraki. The climate on the northern side of the Nakauvadra range is similar to that of western Viti Levu, drier and suited for growing sugar cane.   This mountainous region around Rakiraki is home to the world renowned 'Fiji Water'. Visits to the Fiji Water Plan can be arranged beforehand.

Ba

Ba is a small agricultural town on the Kings Road. It is here that you leave the Kings Road and head inland for trips into the highlands to Monasavu Dam, Navala Village and for white water rafting trips on the upper Ba River.Navala Village is a national heritage site and one of the only remaining traditional villages consisting solely of bures. Permission to visit and/or take photos must be obtained through the turanga-ni-koro (head of the village) for a small fee and sevusevu. It is well worth it to see the woven wall architecture up close and to mingle with the villagers.
